BIBLIOTHERAPY: The Sensitive Patient’s Healing Guide by Neil Nathan, MD

I randomly stopped in at Olos Integrative Medicine’s farmette a few months back and got to meet the founder, Dr. Kat Hopkins, MD. I shared a bit about my health and she recommended, The Sensitive Patient’s Healing Guide by Neil Nathan, MD. This is a current guide to healing from nervous system sensitivity and complex health conditions that was published in 2024. It describes how nervous systems can “become overexcited or hyperreactive in response to a wide variety of stimuli.”

Rates of chronic illness and hypersensitivity are on the rise due to our current lifestyles: higher exposure to toxicity in our food systems, household products, chemicals, electronics, etc. Millions of people struggle with GI, autoimmune, sleep, fatigue, dizziness, migraines, and countless other chronic symptoms that may be expressions of dysregulation and oversensitivity.

This book includes 27 Chapters most written by different medical and scientific experts on various topics such as the Limbic System, Polyvagal Theory, Mast-Cell Activation, Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, EMFs, Oxalates, Genetics, Mold Toxicity, Long Haul COVID, and Ketamine. It discusses symptoms, root causes, and treatment approaches.

This book is dense with information and heavy on biology. The tone is written towards health care professionals more than lay people. I can see that this will function as a resource guide that I come back to again and again. It struck me how much we need to be self-advocating around our health and how many of us accept feeling less than ideal as “normal.” Our bodies want to be balanced, regulated, and healthy! Dr. Nathan states there is hope to fully recover from sensitivity and chronic health conditions.
