Psychotherapy & Counseling

"There is a candle in your heart, ready to be kindled. There is a void in your soul, ready to be filled. You feel it, don't you?"

— Rumi

"For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), It's always our self we find in the sea.”

— EE Cummins

Philosophy on Psychotherapy

Therapy is a collaborative adventure. It is meant to create self-awareness, movement, and hope. As human beings we are all capable of doing horrific and heroic things. The difference is only in the circumstances and the unique creation of self. We are all choice makers. You are the expert on your life. Responsibility and accountability are required. Therapy is a process that is sometimes painful, sometimes fun.

Lifestyle Development

An individual style of living (a.k.a. lifestyle, personality) is influenced by family history, in utero experience, genetics, neurophysiology, attachment style, toxic exposure, traumatic events, and life experiences and is usually formed by the time we are 6-10 years old. We design our concept of self, others, and the world around us and this dictates how we move through life; expressed through our actions, thoughts, and emotions. Problem being this is often based on our child logic which no longer serves us in adulthood. As human beings if our needs are not met, we try all kinds of creative (crazy) things to get them met, some of them adaptive and socially interested, and others not so much.

Health, Trauma, and Healing

As humans, health is our natural state. We are whole-body systems with physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, behavioral, social, and psychological parts. Health is having all aspects of us integrated and functioning well.

When we encounter threat or overwhelm it can be too much for our whole-body system to integrate. This lack of integration can lead to symptoms or trauma responses (i.e. sleep issues, low mood, anxiety, irritability, etc.). Trauma is injury to the whole-person system that may leave us feeling stuck, rigid, fearful, or unable to let something go.

Healing is integration and resolution of symptoms. When you heal, you grow. Psychotherapy encourages integration and healing through presence, psychoeducation, skill development, insight, and by applying neurologically based, body-brain treatments such as EMDR and BRAINSPOTTING.
