V. Stephanie Johnson from The Garage Bikes + Brews DEFINING: A Life Well Lived

What a powerful question…how do you define a life well lived?

A life well lived is one filled with purpose, joy, and fulfillment. It's not about having a perfect life, but rather finding happiness and contentment in the imperfections. Being able to laugh at yourself.  My word is authentic, I think a life well lived is one in which you speak your truth and also listen with a constantly open, curious mind.  It's surrounding yourself with loved ones, creating unforgettable memories, and contributing to the world in your own unique way.  A life well lived is measured by the impact we leave on others and the legacy we leave behind.

How does your business/what you do support your wellbeing/mental health/’life well lived?’

The Garage Bikes + Brews is a bicycle shop and brewery.  Opening and operating this business supports my well being and fills me with an amazing sense of purpose.  I discovered cycling about 14 years ago.  I was in the middle of a major life transition.  My life journey had a fork in the road, as I developed a rare disease which required a total fusion in my wrist.  This procedure left me unable to do what I believed was my life's work, as a nurse midwife.  After my rehab I decided that I could wallow in self pity of my situation or take better care of myself.  A friend introduced me to cycling and  I fell madly in love with the freedom being on two wheels provided me.

Working in a bike shop provides me with daily opportunities to assist others to improve their own mental and physical health.  I am passionate about biking and all things bikes.  From triathlon to fat bikes and all those in between.  Most recently I have been doing bike touring or bikepacking allowing me to travel and see the world while on two wheels.

The flexibility of owning my own business allows me the opportunity to travel and ride my bike more than being employed in a full time job could.  This business is really 2 in 1 (bike shop and brewery), as such it is a ton of work, but all the work is a labor of love for me.

How can your business support the wellbeing/mental health of others? Or support community members in building a ‘life well lived?’

The Garage Bikes + Brews goal is to make cycling fun for everyone. We are passionate about bikes and the biking lifestyle. We are an enthusiastic team excited to educate and energize people with our passion for all things cycling by creating an atmosphere of creativity, integrity, approachability, and community. Enjoy all this over your favorite beverage and conversation.

The bike shop side of the business is excited to get more bodies on bikes, any shape or size.  We love to assist families and friends to enjoy the ride together, discovering quality time outdoors and being physically active. The brewery side allows us to create a unique environment with a relaxed, chill vibe for the community to come together and enjoy live music, events and great beverages.   All of these elements improve the well being of those in our community.  One of my most favorite things is the magical time of summer with the sun setting, as people are biking or walking down the path up to The Garage to enjoy each other's company and the live music outdoors.  This is when I know I am living a life well lived!
