The Window of Tolerance
Dr. Daniel Siegel, neuropsychiatrist introduced the concept of a Window of Tolerance. The Window of Tolerance is about the optimal range of nervous system arousal and how it impacts one’s ability to be present, learn, and respond to stress. The idea is that when we are regulated, all systems are a go, green light, we can attend, focus, and be responsive. We are in control of our thoughts, emotions, and bodies.
If we sense a real or perceived threat, we have automatic nervous system responses. Hyperarousal is our fight/flight activation energy. It may look like panic, anger, or aggression. It pushes us out of the top of our Window of Tolerance. Hypoarousal is when we do not have enough activation energy moving in our nervous system and we drop out the bottom of our Window of Tolerance. Examples of this response are collapse, shutdown, dissociation, or overwhelm.
Whether we are running too much or not enough energy in our nervous system, it impedes our ability to be present, to feel at ease, and to be available to connect. Understanding the Window of Tolerance is a wonderful tool so that you are able to work with your nervous system, not against it. The more we are able to be regulated and be in our Window of Tolerance, the more we are able to access wellness, enjoyment, and healthy connection.
If we are aware of being outside of our Window with too much or not enough activation energy, we can take action to shift our states by doing things such as mindfulness practices, exercising, discharging or soothing behaviors, or deep breathing.
