I tell my clients and workshop participants all the time that bilateral and biolateral music are great tools for regulation and calm!

  • Going to the dentist and hate it?

  • Afraid of flying?

  • Lacking focus, feeling scattered, and need to get a lot of shit done?

  • Have a headache?

  • Neck tension or pain?

  • Feel on the verge of a panic attack?

***ALL REASONS TO POP IN THOSE AIRBUDS, AIRPODS, or HEADPHONES and listen to bilateral music.***

Both EMDR and Brainspotting Therapy use special music. EMDR suggests bilateral stimulation music which shifts the sound in a rhythmic fashion between your left and right ears. These tunes are meant to balance and regulate the nervous system.

The founder of Brainspotting, Dr. David Grand suggests using biolateral music for Brainspotting which also shifts from right to left ears, but is less predictable and so keeps parts of the brain better engaged.

Both bilateral and biolateral music support processing, engage the parasympathetic nervous system (the calming part), and enhance right-left brain communication.

Clients often ask if binaural beats are different and the answer is YES. Binaural beats use two difference frequencies to create a perceived third beat. They target specific brain wave states. People claim they can help with stress, anxiety, focus, and sleep. Binaural beats can also sometimes be bilateral stimulation.

There are many different albums out there with bilateral music and fewer with biolateral music. There are variations that are instrumental, ambient, nature-based so it can help to take a listen and find what resonates for you!
