Brainspotting Parts of Self!
I am coming off of an intensive weekend training with Dr. Cherie Lindberg on POSTTRAUMATIC GROWTH: BRAINSPOTTING & PARTS ROADMAP TO LIBERATION. For several years, I’ve incorporated parts work into BRAINSPOTTING sessions. Following this training, I’m guessing I will be incorporating even more parts work!
Of the 1000+ brainspotting sessions I’ve done, some of the most fascinating and profound have been using parts work.
In the language of Richard C. Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems Model (IFS), we all have parts of self. Our parts are self-created to serve certain purposes. Parts carry emotions, beliefs, and symptoms (pain, headaches, anxiety, aggression, depression, etc). Just like you’d want to stop a child in a family from acting out by changing the family system, to treat an acting out part, you need to change the internal system. IFS is a systematic approach of how to engage with different parts of self and liberate burdened parts so that the internal system has more space, flow, and harmony.
As taught by Dr. Lindberg, Brainspotting is inherently a parts approach- “we are biologically made up of parts,” parts are seen as “protective, adaptive responses that form within the developing nervous system during moments of emotional overwhelm…” These parts are “neural imprints carrying emotion, sensation, memory, or belief,” beyond conscious awareness.
The BRAINSPOTTING world and parts work intersect when it comes to helping clients heal. Brainspotting parts of self, can reharmonize the inner system, give voice to parts, and allow the system to be led in healthier ways.
BRAINSPOTTING PARTS is an approach that uses curiosity, creativity, and the divine wisdom of your system. Coriander Living Collective is here to support you on your healing journey. Curious? Reach out if you’re interested in a free consultation.
