Can You Do EMDR and BRAINSPOTTING Virtually?
YES! Absolutely! I find that EMDR and BRAINSPOTTING transition well into a virtual environment. Outcome data supports using these modalities in an online or virtual environment are as effective as in-person. A lesson learned from the pandemic!
Here are some of the benefits of virtual or online therapy:
The convenience, not needing to travel to appointments or allow for commuting time.
The flexibility to be able to meet during the day vs. after work (ie. during a lunch break).
Some people feel safer at home with their belongings, pets, etc. surrounding them.
Creates access for those with limited mobility or barriers to traveling to appointments.
Some areas have limited mental health services and providers, access to a larger network of therapists, or speciality therapists, anywhere in the State!
With that being said, online or virtual EMDR or BRAINSPOTTING might NOT be a good fit for everyone. Here are some considerations:
Do you have a reliable internet connection or strong mobile signal? (Could you utilize a free public library conference room?)
Do you have a secure, private, safe space to do sessions from, free of distractions?
Do you feel confident using computers and technology?
Are you comfortable with the idea of being on a screen with your therapist vs. in a room together?
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to re-process memory. In a virtual environment we use eye movements, bilateral music, or tapping to administer the bilateral stimulation. For BRAINSPOTTING, we use biolateral music.
