Learn to Regulate Your Nervous System: The Power of Self-Brainspotting
Have you ever felt like your mind is running at high speed while your body carries a heavy, unspoken weight? Whether it shows up as racing thoughts before bed, persistent anxiety, sudden irritability, or a sense of feeling emotionally stuck, these physical and emotional responses are clear signals from your nervous system.
In a world that constantly demands our attention and energy, having reliable, accessible tools to calm and balance our internal system is essential for living a grounded, satisfied life.
While therapy is a wonderful space to process deep-seated challenges, self-regulation is a skill you can cultivate and practice anytime, anywhere. One of the most effective, neurobiologically grounded methods for achieving this that I know is Self-Brainspotting (BSP).
What is BSP?
Discovered in 2003 by Dr. David Grand, BSP is a powerful relational, body-brain-based therapy. It operates on a simple yet profound premise: where you look affects how you feel.
When we experience stress, trauma, or emotional overwhelm, those experiences don't just stay in our thoughts—they get stored in the subcortical brain and mapped within the physical body. By identifying specific eye positions that connect to the felt sense of an issue in the body, BSP accesses this stored subcortical material. This allows your brain's natural self-healing capacity to metabolize unprocessed stress and guide your nervous system back toward a state of homeostasis.
BSP has been shown to support individuals struggling with:
Sleep disturbances and fatigue
Chronic anxiety and panic
Persistent stress and emotional burnout
Irritability
Negative self-beliefs
Physical tension and pain
The Power of Self-BSP
While traditional BSP is facilitated by a trained practitioner, Self-BSP adapts these principles into a practical, mindfulness-based self-care tool.
Through gentle, focused eye positions and mindfulness techniques—often paired with bilateral sound or music—you can learn to navigate your own inner landscape, process daily stressors, and settle your nervous system independently. In fact, spending just 10 with a Self-BSP practice can lead to noticeable shifts in physical tension and emotional clarity.
