How Do We Heal?
As humans, health is our natural state. We are whole-body systems with physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, behavioral, social, and psychological parts. Health is having all aspects of us integrated and functioning well.
Healing in the physical sense is the body’s natural ability to repair and restore tissue function and structure.
We all know that if we get a cut, there is a natural healing process that will follow. But what if the injury we have suffered is not physical? What if it is emotional, psychological, or spiritual?
Then the healing process may not seem as obvious and yet we have capacity to heal in all realms. Natural processes that may aid in non-physical healing could include: sharing your story with loved ones, venting to a colleague, going on a run, journaling, reading a self-help book, getting a good night’s sleep, or allowing for time to integrate your experience and for your body to find homeostasis.
Sometimes, when we encounter a threat or overwhelm it can be too much for our whole-body system to integrate. This lack of integration can lead to symptoms or trauma responses (i.e. sleep issues, low mood, anxiety, irritability, etc.). Trauma is an injury to the whole-person system that may leave us feeling stuck, rigid, fearful, or unable to let something go.
If you have suffered an event or experience that has left you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or with lingering fears or symptoms, trauma psychotherapy may help you integrate! Psychotherapy encourages integration and healing through presence, psychoeducation, skill development, insight, and by applying neurologically based, body-brain treatments such as EMDR and BRAINSPOTTING.
Healing is integration and resolution of symptoms. When you heal, you grow.
