Brainspotting to Heal from Infidelity
Unfortunately, many of us are touched by infidelity, cheating, and affairs. Just like any trauma, there is a systemic injury to the whole person system, the impacts can be physical behavioral, emotional, psychological, spiritual, cognitive, or relational. There can be damage to your sense of self and worldview and other nasty symptoms that can be hard to move through and overcome.
Following finding out about infidelity, if you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unable to move forward, BRAINSPOTTING might be the perfect intervention to bring relief and clarity!
Developing Empathy in Children
Empathy is a function of the upstairs brain, and a skill that needs to be developed. According to Siegel and Payne Bryson, a wonderful way to cultivate empathy is to “ask simple questions that encourage the consideration of another’s feelings…” Simply draw the child’s attention to the feelings of others.
BIBLIOTHERAPY: Hormone Repair Manual: Every Woman’s Guide to Healthy Hormones After 40
If you are a woman that is 35+ years old, you must read this book. It’s wild to learn things about my own body that I did not know, curious why culturally we do NOT talk more about menopause and perimenopause, and empowering to have a guide as I navigate these coming years with clear, concise data and treatment interventions for optimal health.
The 3 Necessary Components for Relationships to Survive Infidelity
Cheating. Affairs. Infidelity. Unfaithfulness. Can be devastating to a relationship and to individuals, or they can be an opportunity for personal and relationship growth. The research varies on affairs and infidelity rates, but roughly half of people admit to engaging in cheating behavior. It’s likely that you or someone you care about will be touched by infidelity.
How To Navigate Grief During Remembrance Holidays and 12 Ways to Show-Up For Those Grieving
The current season of celebrations and remembrance including Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and Father's Day are rightfully ours to honor and enjoy. The season also calls to my attention some areas of loss and grief that people may be experiencing.
There are many types of grief, and the loss is sometimes ambiguous or disregarded. If you find yourself grieving or noticing the grief of others at this time of celebration, here are some thoughts about how to work through it and/or support those who are grieving.
Fostering Self-Understanding in Children
Self-understanding uses higher level parts of the brain to interpret emotions and sensations that come from the lower parts of the brain. According to Siegel and Payne Bryson one of the best ways to foster self-understanding in children is to “ask questions that help them look beyond the surface of what they understand…”
Bibliotherapy: The Whole-Brain Child
I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Dan Siegel speak in California years back, he is one of the leaders in the field of psychiatry. The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind by Daniel J. Siegel, MD and Tina Payne Bryson, PhD has been on my bookshelf unread for years. The whole time, I was reading it, I kept thinking, I should have read this earlier! Everyone that interacts with kids must read this book!

Ready for Spring? A Reflection on Adjusting to Change
With Spring approaching… (Is this a joke? As I write this, we are under another Winter Storm Watch!!!) I have been reflecting on change, renewal, and fresh starts. This happens for me and many of my clients each year at this time. For many of us in the Midwest, Spring can bring a sense of increased motivation, renewal, hope, and improved mood. After months of cold, dark days, our bodies and minds begin to crave the predictable and desirable change of season. We know what to expect. We know we will move through the seasonal cycle as we have done many times before.

Do You Ever Feel Like Two Separate People?Bibliotherapy: Of Two Minds/Dual-Brain Psychology
Dr. Fredric Schiffer is a psychiatrist and teaches the theory and practice of Dual-Brain Psychology. In his book, Of Two Minds he describes how after reviewing the split-brain studies of the 1960s, patients who had their corpus callosums cut, manifested two separate minds and personalities!
He believes that most of us have two minds, one linked to each hemisphere; one that is more mature, reasonable, and present orientated, and one that is more childlike, emotional, and holds traumatic experience. He shows how this explains changes in mood and personality where someone might seem like two different people.
